We consider the support from him very important Robert Menendez, whose interventions are very correct and rational. And we expect that in this direction they will not allow Turkey, as long as there is this revisionism and all this rhetoric against both Cyprus and Greece to arm itself, since we see that there is no corresponding respect for sovereign rights, but also for the international law, as well as the law of the sea from Turkey’s side, said Minister of Defense of Cyprus Charalambos Petridis.
On the occasion of the end of his term, Mr. Petridis gave a press conference in which he presented the report of the Ministry of Defense, where, among other things, he referred to the defense cooperation of the Republic of Cyprus with other states, but also to the actions of Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean region .
Responding to a question from ERT and the Athens News Agency and asked to comment on the statements of US Senator Robert Menendez that he will block the sale of F-16s to Turkey and that the sale can be released “if only if Turkey abandons its aggressive attitude towards both the Hellenic Republic and Cyprus, as well as other actions in the Eastern Mediterranean that are against our national interests and our national security”, Mr. Petridis said that “the Turkish provocation is here and we see that it will remain so we are adapting and we accordingly. It is clear that there is a positive impact from the equipment in Greece and Cyprus, we are also in the modernization process. As you know very well, KD, as a semi-occupied country, must have the appropriate equipment and technology for deterrence issues. We are proceeding with the implementation of programs, we have raised enough funds for the equipment sector, we have signed several contracts related to equipment and we are in the implementation stage”.
We work with various countries inside and outside the EU, including the US, he noted. Finally, Mr. Petridis did not fail to mention the excellent cooperation with Greece, as well as the role it plays as a factor of stability and security in the Eastern Mediterranean region, as well as the benefit that arises for Cyprus from the cooperation with states of the region in Defense and Security issues.
