Outgoing Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern made her last public appearance before stepping down as New Zealand prime minister today, saying leading the country was “the greatest privilege of my life”.

Jacinda Ardern will leave her post tomorrow, Wednesday after suddenly announcing her resignation last week. Chris Hipkins will be sworn in as the country’s new prime minister

“I leave with a greater love and affection for Aotearoa (the Maori name for New Zealand) and its people than when I started,” Ardern said. “I didn’t think that was possible.” he added.

“For my part, I want you to know that my experience in this position in New Zealand and with New Zealanders has been one of love, understanding and kindness,” said Jacinda Ardern, dressed in a traditional Maori feather cloak and clearly excited.

Meanwhile, Ardern rejected speculation – which has been widespread in New Zealand since her resignation – that the political and sexist abuse she suffered during my tenure were not what prompted her to step down.

Several Maori leaders expressed their support for Ardern as a leader and person.
