Mike Pence, vice president of the United States during the administration of Donald Trump, is the latest involved in the series of controversies of classified documents in the country. A lawyer for the Republican discovered about a dozen secret files in the former vice-president’s home in Carmel, Indiana, and handed them over to the FBI, the American federal police, according to CNN.
The search came after similar files were found in President Joe Biden’s private office and residence. The new finding, however, gains momentum because Pence had been saying repeatedly that he did not have any confidential documents in his possession.
There is still no clarity on the subjects and sensitivity of the materials found. According to CNN, Pence’s team plans to notify the US Congress later on Tuesday (24).
The American network claims that the search of the residence was at the request of Pence himself. Part of the documents found in four boxes stored in the former vice president’s house contained confidential material. The Republican’s lawyer would then have notified the National Archives, which, in turn, informed the Department of Justice.
Afterwards, the FBI requested that the files be collected, and Pence nodded. According to a letter from the Republican team to the National Archives, “Vice President Pence was unaware of the existence of confidential documents in his official residence” and “understands the great importance of protecting” the material and cooperating with investigations.
