“I want to resume a working dialogue with Turkey,” he stressed
Sweden wants to restore dialogue with Turkey regarding Sweden’s and Finland’s NATO membership applications, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson said today.
“There is no other matter of national security more important than the fact that we, together with Finland, quickly become members of NATO,” Christerson told reporters.
Christerson said he wants to return to a functional dialogue on joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. If we do not have a functional dialogue, it will be more difficult for Sweden to join NATO and this will have consequences for the country’s security, he stressed.
“I want to resume a working dialogue with Turkey,” he stressed, criticizing the “provocateurs” who are trying to destabilize the Swedish candidacy and calling for “calmness” in the face of a “serious” situation.
The Swedish Prime Minister also stated that his country needs full NATO membership to have the security guarantee provided for in Article 5.
Turkey has indefinitely postponed tripartite talks with Sweden and Finland on joining NATO after weekend anti-Turkish protests in Stockholm, one of which saw a far-right politician burn a copy of the Koran near the Turkish embassy.
