A group of Peruvian parliamentarians presented this Wednesday (25) a motion that seeks to remove the president of Peru, Dina Boluarte. According to a document seen by Reuters, the parliamentarians accuse the president of “permanent moral incapacity”.
The measure comes amid violent protests following the ousting and arrest of his predecessor, former President Pedro Castillo, which left more than 50 dead and hundreds arrested.
The impeachment request, signed by more than 20 left-wing congressmen who support Castillo, must be approved by 52 votes before it can be debated in Congress.
Research by the Institute of Peruvian Studies points out that 71% of the population say they disapprove of the way Dina Boluarte conducts the government. Only 19% of citizens said they approved of her management – the data was released by the newspaper La República.
The Peruvian government has declared a state of emergency in four provinces and three regions of the country and has closed tourist access to Machu Pichu citing security reasons due to protests calling for Boluarte’s resignation.
The acts, which have spread across the country since the ousting and arrest of the former president, after the populist tried to carry out a coup d’état, call for the president’s departure, the dissolution of the unicameral Parliament and the immediate calling of elections —Dina tries put together an agreement to bring forward the election from 2026 to 2024.
