Podcast: Lula’s 1st international trip and Brazil’s relationship with Latin America

by

President Lula made his first international trip this week, with a visit first to Argentina and then to Uruguay.

The commitment to go to the neighboring country to meet Argentine President Alberto Fernández had already been defined shortly after the PT’s inauguration. The two reaffirmed their vows of rapprochement, said they had advanced in projects such as creating a common currency for bilateral trade and signed cooperation agreements.

Lula also met businessmen and participated in the CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) summit. Brazil had left the bloc during the government of Jair Bolsonaro. In the speech, Lula said that he wants to strengthen dialogue with Latin American countries and reinforce multilateralism in the region.

In Uruguay, the president met the rightist Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou, with whom he spoke about infrastructure works and the trade agreement that Uruguayans want to make with China – a negotiation that is seen by Brazil as a threat to Mercosur.

This Thursday’s Café da Manhã (26) discusses the main proposals for partnerships discussed during Lula’s first international trip and analyzes Brazil’s relationship with other Latin American countries. The podcast interviews the columnist of Sheet Sylvia Colombo, who accompanied the president’s trip.
