The United States today officially designated the Russian private military company Wagner as an international criminal organization, freezing its assets in the US, for helping the Russian military in the Ukraine war.

Last month the White House said the Wagner Group had received a shipment of weapons from North Korea to help bolster Russian forces in Ukraine, in a sign of the group’s expanding role in the conflict.

The US government also listed a number of individuals and entities under sanctions for their ties to the Wagner company, which it accuses not only of its involvement in the Russian invasion of Ukraine but also of its involvement in crimes it has committed in other countries. .

“Wagner’s associates are involved in ongoing criminal activities, including mass executions, rape, child abduction, and renditions in the Central African Republic and Mali,” the US Treasury Department said in a statement.

“Today’s sanctions against the Wagner Group, as well as new sanctions against their partners and other companies that support the Russian military machine, will further prevent Putin from arming it,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said.

At the same time as imposing sanctions on Wagner, the US Treasury Department added the names of 19 Russians to the sanctions list, including Deputy Prime Minister Denis Madurov, Tatarstan Governor Rustam Minikhanov and his wife Gulsina Minikhanova, the director of the Federal Prison Service (FSIN) Arkady Gostev, the director of the FSIN in Rostov Dmitry Bezruki, the head of the presidential administration of the State Council Alexander Harichev and the founder of the Skarlet telecommunications company under the trade name Yota Sergey Antoniev.

Sanctions were imposed on the head of the “Kalashnikov” group, Alan Luzhnikov.

Russian shipbuilding and war industry companies have also been included in the list – these are the Almaz-Antei group and its general manager Yan Novikov, the air transport company Aviakon Chitotrans and some aircraft belonging to it as well as some companies related to the Rostec.

Also included in the list were the two yachts named Addiction and natta, related to businessman Antoniev.
