Heavy rain caused widespread flooding in New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland, on Monday, alerting emergency services and forcing organizers to cancel a planned Elton John concert.

Oakland Emergency Management said in a Twitter post that the north, northwest and west parts of the city were affected by flooding and that conditions were expected to worsen.

The agency advised residents in the most vulnerable areas to prepare for evacuations.

Videos posted on social media showed firefighters, police and soldiers safely evacuating people trapped in flooded homes using ropes and lifeboats.

There is no information yet on the number of those released.

Due to the floods, main roads were blocked, resulting in long queues of cars on the highways.

Elton John’s concert in the city, which was expected to be attended by around 40,000 spectators, was also cancelled.

“Due to the weather conditions the concert has been cancelled. Our organizing team is working to reroute the buses that would be used specifically for the concert and help get (those who had a ticket) back home…as soon as possible.” the city’s public transport company said in a statement on Twitter.

Flights to Auckland were delayed or canceled due to the bad weather.
