A shooting attack on a synagogue in Israel killed at least seven people and wounded five others on Friday night (27).
The case took place in the neighborhood of Neve Yaakov, in Jerusalem. According to the Times of Israel newspaper, the emergency service was called to attend to at least ten victims at the scene. The shooter, according to police, was killed.
The action comes at a time of rising tension in Israel. The death of at least ten Palestinians in actions by the Israeli army this Thursday (26) exacerbated the crisis with Palestine and raised fears of a broader conflict on the part of the international community.
In the early hours of Friday, Israel reported rocket fire from the Gaza Strip and responded with a series of airstrikes. The Islamic Jihad group said the offensive carried the message that “the enemy must remain alert because spilled Palestinian blood is costly”.
According to investigators, a man drove up to the synagogue on Friday and apparently fired indiscriminately. A pistol used in the attack was seized. Police are searching for suspects who may have helped the shooter.
Police reported that among those shot are a 70-year-old woman and two young men, aged 20 and 14 – all three are in critical condition.
