The new Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius once again ruled out the possibility of Germany sending fighter jets to Ukraine
Germany’s 100 billion euro special defense fund is no longer enough to cover its needs, the new defense minister has said Boris Pistorius in an interview with the Sueddeutsche Zeitung published today.
Pistorius, who took office last week after his predecessor resigned, said Germany would also have to increase its annual regular defense spending from the current level of about 50 billion euros.
Germany also needs to replenish its stockpile of military hardware, including replacing the 14 Leopard tanks that Berlin agreed to send to Ukraine to help repel a Russian invasion, he said.
Germany’s decision to suspend compulsory military service in 2011 was a mistake, he added, saying he was reluctant to burden new generations but was open to discussing a new model to strengthen the relationship between citizens and the state.
Asked if Germany would send fighter jets to Ukraine, Pistorius said it was “out of the question”.
