At least seven people were killed and three others wounded during a shooting incident in the Neve Yaakov neighborhood in Jerusalem on Friday night, according to Israel’s emergency rescue services, Magen David Adom (MDA).

The assailant was neutralized at the scene and some of the injured are in critical condition, MDA said.

According to the latest information, the perpetrator has been identified as 21-year-old Alkam Khairi, a resident of East Jerusalem, in the Shuafat area, who had no known connections with terrorist organizations.

According to the preliminary police investigation, the gunman was waiting outside a synagogue and opened fire when worshipers started to leave the building. The authorities found the firearm used by the perpetrator of the attack at the scene.

“We saw a woman and four men lying on the road. They suffered gunshot wounds and had no sign of life. We had to immediately confirm their death,” said MDA paramedic Fadi Dekidek. “Three more injured, including a 70-year-old woman, are in critical condition and were taken to the hospital,” he added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been informed of the incident and said he is receiving all the information and will assess the situation later today. Police Commissioner Kobi Sabtai arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting. The Minister of National Security also arrived at the scene.

The Hamas spokesman said the shooting was in retaliation for the Israeli army’s raid on the Jenin refugee camp on Thursday, which killed nine Palestinians and wounded 20 others in clashes with Israeli soldiers.
