A US wing general has warned that he believes there is a high risk that the US will be involved in a war with China in 2025, possibly over Taiwan, calling on his men to be ready to fight this year.

“I hope I’m wrong. My gut tells me that we will be fighting in 2025,” wrote Michael Minihan, a wing general of the US Air Force, in an internal memo, the authenticity of which was confirmed by the US Pentagon to AFP on Friday.

China’s President Xi Jinping will have “the team, the motivation and the opportunity” in 2025, the top US military officer says, predicting that 2024 elections on the island will give the Chinese leader “a reason to » to take action.

The 2024 US election will also offer Beijing a “distracted” America, he also believes.

In his memo, he calls on his men to train for combat, including marksmanship: “Mark at the head,” admonishes the wing commander.

In August, China launched large-scale military drills around Taiwan in an unprecedented show of force in retaliation for a visit to the island by Nancy Pelosi, then the speaker of the House of Representatives.

China has considered the island of 24 million people its province, pending reunification with the mainland since the end of the civil war in 1949.

He sees with increasing displeasure the strained relations in recent years between Taipei and Washington, which has provided Taiwan with military aid for decades.
