The US diplomatic mission advises US citizens to remain “vigilant, avoid crowds and keep a low profile”.
France: At the same time, the French diplomatic mission in Ankara sent a similar email message to its citizens in Turkey, referring to the US warning.
“The risk of a terrorist attack in Turkey remains high, as recalled by the warning issued for security reasons by the US embassy on January 27, 2023, the French residing in or passing through Turkey are asked to be on maximum alert, particularly in the gathering places that likely to be frequented by foreign nationals, including places of worship.”
THE Germany and the Italy they also warned their citizens of the risk of attacks.
Demonstrations took place last week in Stockholm and today in Copenhagen during which copies of the Koran, the Muslim holy book, were burned by an extremist who claims he is protesting Turkey’s veto of Sweden’s NATO membership. .
Since May, Ankara has blocked the enlargement of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization with the inclusion of that country, as well as Finland, demanding from Stockholm the extradition of Kurdish refugees whom it considers “terrorists”.
These incidents were denounced and condemned by the governments of these countries and by Western capitals, especially Washington.
But Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned that Sweden could no longer count on Turkey’s “support” to join NATO, and negotiations were officially suspended.
