Spanish police seize 4.5 tonnes of cocaine after raid on livestock ship off Canary Islands
Spanish police seized 4.5 tons of cocaine with an estimated sales value of 105 million euros after raiding a livestock ship off the Canary Islands earlier this week, a statement said today.
The ship had made port calls in about 12 countries before Tuesday’s raid, and police said drug traffickers have started using livestock vessels because it’s harder for police to track their illegal cargo.
Police arrested 28 crew members of the Togolese-flagged Orion V, whose movements were being monitored from Colombia by Spanish authorities, the US Drug Enforcement Agency and Togolese police.
Officers removed dozens of crates containing the cocaine from the ship on the port side of Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria.
