A tour bus carrying 60 passengers has plunged off a cliff in Peru, killing one at least 23 people. Rescue crews rushed to Piura, in northwestern Peru.

The bus was traveling along the Panamericana Norte, which is a major highway that runs along the west coast of the South American country. The coach was heading north from Lima to Tuba with 60 passengers, according to the Sun. The car accident was reported at 5 am (local time). It is believed that the bus driver lost control on the road and fell from a height of 48 meters into a gorge. Police confirmed that 23 people were killed, while the injured were taken to a local hospital in Talara, 683 miles northwest of the capital Lima.

Peru has a high death toll from traffic accidents, with the World Health Organization recording 4,414 deaths on the country’s roads in 2020.
