Colombia: Record for cocaine seizures in 2022

by

Security forces seized 671 tons of cocaine in 2022, an amount that exceeded that of 2021 by about 1.7 tons.

The Colombian authorities proceeded in 2022 to seize the largest amount of cocaine than any other year, the Ministry of Defense announced yesterday Saturday.

Security forces seized 671 tons of this substance in 2022, an amount that exceeded that of 2021 by about 1.7 tons.

“It is necessary to fight against the illegal income brought by drug trafficking, because they cause great harm to our country,” said Defense Minister Ivan Velasquez, according to a ministry press release. He praised the “great results” brought by the efforts of the prosecuting authorities.

According to official data, most seizures were made in the provinces of Narinho, Bolivar and Valle del Cauca.

The production and trafficking of cocaine is believed to largely fund the armed conflict that has raged in Colombia for some six decades, with hundreds of thousands dead and millions displaced.

The National Liberation Army (ELN), officially the last to continue armed struggle in the Latin American state, dissident groups of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), which reject the 2016 peace deal, and gangs formed by former far-right paramilitaries are involved in drug trafficking, according to the authorities.

Cocaine seizures had reached 505 tons in 2020 and 428 tons in 2019.
