China resumes issuing visas to Japanese citizens

by

China has also suspended visas for South Korean citizens following similar health measures taken by Seoul

The issuance of entry visas (visas) for Japanese citizens, after a three-week hiatus, was announced today by the Chinese embassy in Tokyo, a move expected to ease a diplomatic row.

THE China stopped issuing visas to Japanese on Jan. 10 in retaliation for Japan’s tightening of entry regulations for travelers from China, where the number of COVID-19 cases has been on the rise.

THE Japan made molecular testing for the novel coronavirus mandatory for travelers from China, before departure and upon arrival. Beijing had called this claim by Japan “discriminatory”, which still stands today.

“Starting today, the embassy and consulate-general offices of the People’s Republic of China will resume issuing standard entry visas for Japanese citizens,” announced the Chinese Embassy without elaborating further on its website.

China has also suspended visas for South Korean citizens following similar health measures taken by Seoul. So far, no decision has been announced to re-issue them.
