Germany: SPD leader avoids ruling out fighter jet deliveries to Kyiv

“It is important that Germany makes it absolutely clear to Russian President Vladimir Putin that we reject the Russian aggression” in Ukraine, said the head of the Social Democrats, Saskia Esken.

Less than 24 hours after Germany reversed its position on the delivery of Leopard 2 tanks by it and other countries to Ukraine, the leader of the Social Democrats (SPD), Saskia Esken, did not rule out the possibility of fighter jets being sent to Kyiv.

Asked yesterday Sunday if and to what extent she would exclude the supply of fighter jets, Mrs. Esken avoided giving a clear answer. Germany, he said, is not a warring party and Berlin wants to “avoid” the possibility of involvement in armed conflict “in the future”. “The decisive factor is that Germany and NATO are not parties to this war” and that is why the German government is in close consultation with the US government on matters of this nature, Ms Esken insisted, speaking on public television. ARD network.

At the same time, it is important for Germany to make it absolutely clear to Russian President Vladimir Putin that “we reject the Russian aggression” in Ukraine, she said.

Notably, Ms Esken stopped short of explicitly ruling out the supply of aircraft to the Ukrainian air force on a day when Social Democrat Chancellor Olaf Solz said no such question arose in an interview with the Tagesspiegel newspaper.
