The new ambassador of the United States to Russia, Lynn Tracywas mobbed today by a crowd of people shouting anti-American slogans as she entered the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow to present her credentials.

Protesters held placards with anti-Washington messages, one of which read “Your tanks are killing civilians.”

The protests in Russia – on matters particularly related to war – have been effectively banned unless they have the support of the authorities.

Relations between Washington and Moscow are at historic lows. The United States has responded to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by supplying Kyiv with weapons – soon to include tanks – and imposing economic sanctions packages on Russia, in cooperation with its Western allies.

While there have been occasional diplomatic concessions, including prisoner exchanges involving US Marine veteran Trevor Reed and US basketball star Brittney Greiner, high-level contacts between the two sides are rare.

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Ryabkov told Tracy that he expected to follow the principle of non-interference in Russia’s internal affairs, state news agency RIA Novosti reported.

The US embassy said: “Ambassador Tracy is focused on maintaining dialogue between our capitals at a time of unprecedented tension, protecting the interests of American citizens detained in Russia, and supporting ties between the American and Russian people.”
