The fact that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to deliver a video message to Italy has sparked reactions in Italy. Sanremo Italian Song Festival, which will be broadcast by public television Rai, from 7 to 11 February. According to what has become known, Zelensky’s message will be videotaped and is expected to be broadcast at the final of the Festival, shortly before the announcement of the winner.

It is recalled that the Sanremo Festival is an artistic event that every year in Italy breaks television viewing records and gathers the general interest of citizens, commentators and representatives of the entertainment industry.

“Zelensky? I don’t know how she sings, I have other preferences. I wish that this Festival will remain an event concerning Italian song and not become something else”, said Matteo Salvini, Meloni’s deputy prime minister and secretary of the League.

“Nobody can question our will to support Ukraine, but there are opportunities offered for dramatic messages like that of war and others that I think are appropriate,” added the secretary of the centrist Azione (Action) party, Carlo Calenda.

And the leader of the Five Stars and former prime minister, Giuseppe Conteunderlined that he was “delighted when Zelensky was invited to speak, via connection, at the plenary session of the Italian Parliament” but now “he does not consider it unnecessary to take part in such a ‘light musical appointment’ as that of Sanremo”.

“Zelensky in Sanremo? No. This is war, the world is dying,” Gianni Cuperlo, one of the main figures of the center-left Democratic Party, wrote online.

There are, however, some “voices” who are in favor of this whole initiative: “I don’t understand all this noise. Many international personalities from the field of politics have taken part in our Festival and Zelenki has already intervened in Cannes, the Venice Film Biennale and the evening with the Golden Globes,” said the Italian, well-known TV journalist Bruno Vespa.

For the moment, the Italian public television Rai, did not cancel the connection with the Ukrainian president. This afternoon, however, the board of directors of Italian Radio and Television asked the head of the company’s “entertainment” sector, Stefano Coletta, for details about what Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to say in his message.
