“The report states that the situation of certain groups of people in Afghanistan, mainly women and children, is of such a nature as to constitute persecution within the meaning of the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees,” the statement said.
Denmark decided today to systematically grant asylum to Afghan women and girls based on their gender, as they experience a major erosion of their rights after the Taliban returned to power in the country.
The decision is based on information related to the continued deterioration of the living conditions of women and girls in Afghanistan,” the Danish Refugee Appeals Committee said in a statement, citing a recently released European Asylum Support Service report.
“The report states that the situation of certain groups of people in Afghanistan, mainly women and children, is of such a nature as to constitute persecution within the meaning of the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees,” the statement said.
According to the Danish Refugee Appeals Committee, in five pending cases involving Afghan women, these women will be granted asylum under the new decision.
The Authority will also review the cases of Afghan women it had denied asylum to after the Taliban returned to power with a view to granting them residency under the new decision (almost ten cases).
It will also review the total number of cases involving Afghan male citizens (nearly 30 cases) to whom it had refused asylum since that same date.
After returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban have gradually eroded the freedoms women had won over the past twenty years since the fall of their previous regime in 2001.
In addition to being denied the right to education, women are excluded from most public sector jobs.
Women are not allowed to travel unaccompanied by a male relative and must cover themselves with a burqa or hijab when leaving their home.
In late December, Taliban authorities also ordered local NGOs to stop recruiting women after “serious complaints” about the way they dressed, four days after they were banned from university for the same reasons.
