Republican Representative George Santos told supporters this Tuesday (31) that he will refuse to participate in legislative committees, in the first show of weakness since he began to face investigations. Members of his party are calling for him to step down.
The decision was taken after a conversation with the Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, on Monday (30). It was Santos who made the suggestion, said McCarthy, who thought the idea was appropriate “until he can clear it all up.”
After his election, in November last year, The New York Times showed that the deputy, who is the son of Brazilians, lied about various aspects of life to attract voters from his district —from academic and professional curriculum to sources of income and family origins. He would later come under investigation for his campaign accounts as well.
