Belgium is not expected to send F16s to Ukraine, the country’s Defense Minister Ludivine Dentoner said.

“Our F16 aircraft are fully operational, whether they are to provide air cover in our own territory and in the Benelux, or in the context of the collective defense and therefore the air security of the Baltic States. And as for the planes that will replace them, the famous F35s, they will not arrive before 2025,” the Belgian Defense Minister explained in an interview with the French-language public broadcaster rtbf.

“We didn’t have an express request from President Zelensky to provide fighter jets,” Ms Dentoner added.

However, she noted that this needs to be seen in a broader context, meaning, as she noted, “when we participate in enabling the Ukrainians to defend themselves, that’s always something that complements what partners and allies are doing.”
