“Even if the war ended tomorrow, Ukraine would need help to continue to defend itself,” the minister said

“Ukraine needs effective, reliable and lasting military support, which is consistent both in terms of training and logistics,” he says, among other things, in an interview with Le Figaro newspaper the French Minister of Defense Sébastien Lecornou.

“In December, we only talked about ground-to-air defense, in January we are only talking about tanks, in February, I have the feeling that we will only talk about fighter planes,” the French minister says, pointing out at the same time that “the military aid agenda should not it is communicative, it must respond to the real needs of Ukrainians to defend themselves.”

As for whether the manufacturers of weapons systems are able to meet the needs, the minister emphasizes that “they have to enter a war economy”, adding that they “needed visibility,” which was given to them by the president’s announcements regarding the 2024-2030 military planning law. “The French model is based on strategic autonomy,” emphasizes the minister.

He admits, however, to a gap between urgency and capacity, noting that “if we don’t change the way we do things now, we never will! It is also a lesson of Covid. We need to prepare our country to be resilient in the long term.”

“Even if the war ended tomorrow, Ukraine would still need help to continue defending itself and to deter potential attackers, just like us,” Lecornou points out.

For his part, the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, Oleksii Reznikov speaking to the station BFM-TV, he stated that “Russia is preparing very seriously for an attack and mobilizing 500,000 men”, adding that “it could attack on February 24”. The Ukrainian minister finally thanked France for the help, stressing that “the 12 Caesar guns he sent will change the situation”.
