European Union is in the war even without wanting to, says Lula

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) spoke again this Thursday (2nd) about his proposal to create a forum of countries willing to negotiate a peace agreement to end the Ukraine War, which turns one year old next day. 24.

“I want to make a proposal from a group of countries that have nothing to do with the war and can easily talk to the presidents of Ukraine and Russia”, said the PT, referring to his respective counterparts, Volodimir Zelensky and Vladimir Putin.

Lula also commented on the role of European leaders in the conflict. “The European Union, even without wanting to, is in the middle of the war. No one needs to be defeated. Humanity wins with peace.”

The president’s comments were made during an interview with RedeTV! and republished on your profile on social networks. They also come on the same day that EU leaders visited Kiev to reaffirm support for the invaded country and renew sanctions packages against Moscow.

This is the second time this week that Lula proposes a more active participation by Brazil in the pursuit of peace negotiations in Ukraine. On Monday (30th), the President received the Prime Minister of Germany, Olaf Scholz, in Brasília and, among other matters of Brazilian diplomacy, spoke about the possible creation of a forum against war —”a club of people who will want to build peace on the planet”—claiming that international efforts in this regard have so far been unsuccessful.

On the occasion, the PT also said that he has no interest in sending ammunition to Ukraine because he does not want to have any participation in the conflict, even if indirectly. Lula’s position was anticipated by the Sheetwhich revealed that the Brazilian leader vetoed the sending of tank ammunition to Germany, which would be the intermediary, so as not to provoke Russia and not to undermine its position of neutrality.

Also this Thursday, Lula mentioned some of the topics on the agenda for his meeting with US President Joe Biden next week. “I want to discuss with Biden the trade relationship between Brazil and the US and the climate issue. We need to have stronger world governance, so that the decisions of the world forums on climate change are implemented”, said the petista.

The meeting in the US will be Lula’s third international trip since taking office. The first was to Argentina, where he met with his ally, President Alberto Fernández, and participated in the Summit of CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States). Afterwards, the PT member went to Uruguay and met with President Luis Lacalle Pou, listing the signing of an agreement between Mercosur and the European Union as a priority.
