After the rejection of the fourth bill in a row to organize elections this year, Jaime Quito, the proposer of the proposal, said that “Congress must be closed. What needs to be done is for (the country’s president) Dina Bolluarte to resign.”

The Peruvian parliament on Thursday rejected yet another proposal that would have called for early presidential and parliamentary elections at the end of this year and at the same time a referendum to form a Constituent Assembly to draw up a new Constitution, in order to overcome the political crisis and stop the wave of mass protests. mobilizations lasting almost two months in the Latin American state.

The draft law to revise the constitution to allow for elections and popular consultation this year, submitted by the Perú Libre (“Free Peru”, left) party, was voted down by 75 members of Congress. 48 voted in favor and 2 abstained.

“The review did not secure the required number of votes (…) therefore the draft law is not approved,” summarized Jose Williams, the president of the Congress, after the work that lasted a little more than four hours.

After the rejection of the fourth bill in a row to organize elections this year, Jaime Quito, the proposer of the proposal, said that “Congress must be closed. What needs to be done is for (president of the country) Dina Boulwarte to resign.”

Mr. Quito was referring to the central demand of the demonstrators who descended, once again, on the streets of the Peruvian capital yesterday Thursday.

The participants in the mass mobilizations demand the resignation of President Boluarte, the dissolution of the Congress, discredited by public opinion, the immediate calling of parliamentary and presidential elections and the convening of a Constituent Assembly.

The day before Wednesday, parliament rejected the third proposal in a row to speed up the elections it had approved to be held in April 2024, instead of 2026 as normally planned.

The presidency expressed its displeasure with the body’s decision and made it known that it “immediately” submitted a new proposal to hold the elections this year.

The Latin American country’s deep political and social crisis erupted after the suspension, arrest and pretrial detention on December 7 of leftist former President Pedro Castillo, who was accused of attempting a “coup” by announcing that he would dissolve Congress, as this was preparing to remove him from power. He was succeeded by his vice-president at the time, Mrs. Boluarte, whom the protesters describe as a “traitor”.

At least 48 people have lost their lives in mass protests and riots over the past seven weeks.
