The Italian coast guard operation took place 42 miles from the island of Lampedusa
Five men and three women who were on board a boat bound for Lower Italy, were found dead by the Italian coast guard.
The Italian coast guard operation took place 42 miles from the island of Lampedusa. The eight migrants, according to the data so far, died due to the low temperature and lack of food. The rescued are 42 and, as they told the doctors who visited them in Lampedusa, they had started their journey from Sfax, Tunisia.
The mayor of Lampedusa, Filippo Manino, said that the coast guard collected yesterday, Thursday night, “eight bodies, five men and three women, one of whom was pregnant. There are 42 survivors, two of whom are pregnant women.”
According to the testimonies of the rescued, in addition to the eight dead, a newborn also lost his life while crossing the Mediterranean. His mother, in a state of despair, threw his body into the sea and a few hours later, due to the extreme cold, she also died.
