US: Chinese “spy” balloon changed course – Pentagon says no danger

The Pentagon spokesman said the balloon would likely remain in US airspace for a few more days.

A Chinese “spy” balloon flying over US airspace has changed course and is now flying east, about 60,000 feet above the central part of the country, the Pentagon said today, adding that it likely it will continue to be in US airspace for a few more days.

THE Pentagon spokesman quarterback Patrick Ryder declined to specify exactly where the balloon is, saying he doesn’t want to get into an “hour-by-hour” update cycle.

He pointed out that the balloon has a large payload under it as well there is a tracking component.

Fill in that poses no risk to people on the groundthat anyone can look up in the sky and that the Pentagon has no evidence that the balloon is carrying nuclear or radioactive material.

Although Beijing apologized to the US today, referring to a “civilian” aircraft that drifted into US airspace after deviating from its intended course, the incident sparked a strong reaction from the US, with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken postponing his planned visit in China.

Asked about Chinese remorse, the Pentagon spokesman said: “The fact is it’s a spy balloon,” declining to elaborate.

The American Pentagon had announced yesterday that it is monitoring the Chinese spy balloon, which flies at a high altitude over the US territory, passing by sensitive military installations, assuring that it does not pose any “threat”.

US officials said military leaders considered shooting it down over Montana on Wednesday, but ultimately recommended to President Joe Biden against that option because of the safety risk from the debris.

However, in today’s briefing, Ryder said the Pentagon is reviewing its options.
