“Two brothers who were bathing in the pond drowned, as did their cousin who tried to save them,” said Kaa mayor Bashir Matar.
Three Syrian children drowned today in a pond near the Kaa refugee camp in eastern Lebanon after torrential rains hit the area.
“Two brothers who were bathing in the pond drowned, as did their cousin who tried to save them,” said Kaa mayor Bashir Matar.
The three boys were under the age of 10. They were retrieved by soldiers and taken to Hermel Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
For several days, the rains and snow falling in Lebanon have caused significant damage to infrastructure.
Hundreds of thousands of Syrians fled to Lebanon when civil war broke out in their country in 2011. According to authorities, Lebanon hosts about 2 million refugees. Of these, 830,000 are registered by UN agencies. The UNHCR called in early December for aid to be provided to displaced Syrians as well as vulnerable Lebanese citizens as the country experiences an unprecedented socio-economic crisis.
