“Tonight, we can say that Ukraine is making progress towards its goal,” the Ukrainian president said in his speech
The president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said tonight that it is “likely” that formal negotiations for his country’s accession to the European Union will begin this year.
“What did we really agree on today? There is consensus on the fact that it is possible to start accession negotiations this year. Tonight, we can say that Ukraine is making progress towards its goal,” he said in his daily evening address, referring to the results of the EU-Ukraine summit held in Kyiv.
“We discussed and we are already discussing as members of the European community,” he added.
In the Ukrainian capital, where air raid sirens sounded twice today, European Council President Charles Michel, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other senior European officials held talks with Zelensky.
“Ukraine is the EU, the EU is Ukraine,” said Mr Michelle after the session is over.
