New warnings from meteorological services

A phenomenon of “epic proportions” not seen in North America for generations: the weather services of the US and Canada today issued new warnings about polar temperatures, which are expected to fall as low as -50 degrees Celsius in some areas .

In Maine, in the northeastern USA, very close to the border with Canada, today and tomorrow Saturday the thermometer can show up to -51 degrees, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). “It’s an epic arctic cold wave,” the likes of which northern and eastern Maine hasn’t experienced since 1982, forecasters said.

In some parts of the northeastern US and in this part of New England, temperatures due to freezing air may drop to levels not seen in decades or even ever before.

On the other side of the border, Environment Canada warned that the frost will be so strong that anyone walking outside could get frostbite within minutes. In Montreal this afternoon the felt temperature was -41°. The mercury can drop as low as -50° in more northern parts of Quebec. A white cloud, the so-called “Arctic sea smoke” had formed over the St. Lawrence River from water vapor, due to the temperature difference between the air and the unfrozen water.

The few passers-by in downtown Montreal this Friday felt the strong gusts of icy wind.

Electricity company Hydro-Québec predicts record consumption today and tomorrow and urged its customers to conserve energy.

In the US, the coldest night will be this Friday into Saturday, especially in Boston and New York, where thermometers may show -15 degrees.

The northeastern United States has recently experienced a series of extreme weather events. The most recent, on Christmas Day, was a blizzard that buried the city of Buffalo in northwestern New York, killing dozens of people.
