Peru’s parliament bars new attempts to bring forward elections until August

by

The Congress of Peru blocked this Friday (3) any attempt to debate on the anticipation of elections. With that, it closes the way for the replacement of the president and the Parliament itself — one of the main demands of the protesters who have taken to the streets of the country since the removal of the populist leader Pedro Castillo after a failed coup.

The Constitution Commission alleged technical reasons for rejecting the initiative, initially presented by the country’s president, Dina Boluarte. Now, the issue can only be discussed in August, when there is a renewal of sessions.

Parliamentarians presented different proposals to bring forward the elections, but none reached a consensus among the congressmen, despite the growing social upheaval and the high popular rejection of the Peruvian president and Congress.

According to specialists, the only option to bring forward the 2026 elections would be the resignation of Dina Boluarte. That would prompt Congressional President Jose Williams to take the helm and call an immediate vote.

Protests in the streets of Lima continued on Friday. “Because of Congress, the people are in the streets” and “Dina and Congress, the same crap”, shouted dozens of people during a march in the historic center of the Peruvian capital.

Large demonstrations are planned for this Saturday (4) in Lima and other parts of the country, while about 80 roadblocks remained active in seven Peruvian regions.
