The thermometer showed -16 degrees Celsius in Central Park, New York – Forecasters predict an improvement from tomorrow
The northeastern US and eastern Canada are experiencing a freezing weekend, with record-breaking temperatures and cold winds creating dangerous conditions, but conditions are expected to gradually improve starting Sunday.
At Mount Washington, New Hampshire, the felt temperature (ie the feeling of temperature on the body, which can differ from the actual temperature and depends on various factors, such as humidity and wind speed) fell overnight on Friday at -78°C, the National Weather Service (NWS) reported. The top of this mountain is notorious for having “the worst weather in the world”.
According to the Weather Channel’s specialist website, the previous record high temperature was -74°C.
In New York, where the thermometer read -16°C in Central Park, homeless shelters were ordered not to refuse entry to anyone.
In Boston, schools have been closed since Friday as a precaution.
In Maine, the local weather service reported that the temperature reached -51°C in the town of Friendsville, near the Canadian border.
At the Montreal International Airport early in the morning the thermometer showed -29 degrees Celsius – but the temperature felt like -41. In Quebec and many areas of eastern Canada, the felt temperature ranged around -40 or even -50 degrees Celsius.
Due to the extreme conditions, the start of the Quebec Carnival was canceled since, although the participants are used to the cold, the icy air can cause frostbite in a matter of minutes.
Meteorologists predict, however, that from tomorrow Sunday the conditions will start to improve.
