An 18-year-old student, who played the lottery for the first time in her life, won $48 million and became the youngest person in Canada to ever win such a large amount.

Juliet Lamoureux, a student at Chautauqua-Sainte-Marie, Ontario, explained, picking up her cheque, that she bought the lottery ticket at the urging of her grandfather. “He told me: as soon as you turned 18, go buy a lottery ticket, try your luck.”

And luck smiled on her.

Juliette said she had to call her father to explain how the game was played.

OLG, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Authority, revealed late this week the identity of the sole winner of the draw held in early January. Until then, Juliette Lamour hadn’t checked if she had won anything, until she heard her fellow students say that the lucky charm was bought in Chaut-Sainte-Marie. So she downloaded the OLG app to her cell phone and… got dizzy at the zeros that followed the first two numbers of her winnings.

Juliette is studying biology and plans to continue her studies this year. In the summer she is planning a trip with her family while she will invest her money with the help of her father, who is a financial advisor.
