The government needs votes from conservative Republicans to pass the controversial bill.
French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne intends to amend her promoted pension reform – to allow those who started working at a young age to retire earlier than others – in order to secure the necessary support in the National Assembly.
President Emmanuel Macron’s government wants to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 and extend the contribution period for workers in a reform it says is “essential” to the sustainability of the pension system in the coming years. .
Lacking a majority in the National Assembly, the government needs votes from conservative Republicans to pass the controversial bill.
Although the bill provides for the establishment of a pension right for those who started working at the age of less than 20, Prime Minister Bourne declares that she is open to proposals to expand the measure. “We will proceed by expanding the measure … for those who started working at the age of 20 and 21. They will be able to retire at the age of 63,” Bourne said in an interview with Le Journal du Dimanche.
He estimated that the amendment would affect up to 30,000 people and estimated the cost at 1 billion euros per year, explaining that this meant that compensatory resources would have to be sought.
The French government has faced strong strike action since January 10, when it unveiled its controversial pension reform. Labor unions are planning further strikes and demonstrations on Tuesday.
