The earthquake occurred 67 kilometers north, northeast of the city of Kahramanmaras
Turkey and Syria are at the mercy of the forces of nature, as well as after the new big earthquake of 7.7 Richter which occurred at 12.23 (Greece time) new apartment buildings collapsed, with many blocks in 10 cities leveled, just in the neighborhood.
The earthquake struck 67 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Kahramanmaras and had a focal depth of 2 kilometers, EMSC added. It was followed a little later by another strong tremor of magnitude 6 on the Richter scale. After the new strong earthquakes, panic prevailed.
They amount to 1,500 the dead in the two countries from the deadly 7.8 Richter earthquake that occurred at dawn in Gaziantep.
“I had been to the area seven years ago and I saw that the infrastructure was in a terrible state, even new houses, built supposedly according to the latest anti-seismic regulation of Turkey, were badly built, so the casualties will be much more. In the meantime, the post-seismic sequence will last months, and will have events of 6.5 maybe even 7, you understand what this means for the burdened buildings, it is a tragic situation” said Mr. Tselentis. “We had collapses and at a distance of 100 kilometers you can understand the quality of the constructions there,” the director of the Geodynamic Institute, Akis Tselentis, told SKAI.
