The death toll in Turkey and Syria has exceeded 1,500, according to the latest tragic toll, from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck southeast Turkey early this morning, and which was felt as far away as Egypt and Iraq.
The earthquake was centered in Kahramanmaras province and shook southern Turkey and northern Syria during the night. It was followed by another earthquake of magnitude 7.7 in the same area at approximately 12:25 Greek time.
There are hundreds of victims in the regions of northern Syria, in Idlib, Hama and Aleppo, on the border with Turkey, among them dozens of small children who were sleeping in their homes with their families at the time of the earthquake.

At least 592 people have died in the quake, according to Syria’s health ministry and rescue workers in rebel-held areas.
According to the data of the Syrian Ministry of Health, which was reported by the SANA agency, 371 people have been killed in the areas under the control of Damascus and another 1,089 have been injured.
At the same time the White Helmets, the rescuers active in the areas of northern Syria which are controlled by the rebels have recorded at least 221 dead and 419 wounded.
