The mission of 76 specialists in search and rescue operations is being sent directly to Turkey by the United Kingdom, in order to support the post-earthquake operations on the border with Syria.
As the Foreign Office announced, the International Search and Rescue Team has at its disposal special equipment such as acoustic sonar, cement cutting machines and anchoring instruments, as well as specially trained dogs.
A British emergency medical team is also being sent to the quake-hit area.
The mission members are expected to arrive in Gaziantep at 9pm local tonight.
In northwest Syria, the London-funded “White Helmets” have activated a major rescue operation by mobilizing all their available resources.
At the same time, the British government is in contact with British workers in humanitarian organizations in the affected areas and has mobilized consular authorities to provide any assistance needed to British nationals.
Foreign Secretary James Cleverley said the UK “stands ready to provide additional assistance if required”.
