Turkish Journalist’s Shocking Description of Deadly Earthquake: ‘There was chaos all around me’

by

“I saw with my own eyes about 20 people coming out alive from the wreckage through the absolute destruction, injured people being transferred to ambulances and people running left and right looking for their relatives”

“Others were crying for their own people who were trapped in the building, others were coming out of the wreckage unable to believe they were alive, others were praying silently, with tears in their eyes. There was chaos all around me.” VoA journalist Mahmut Bozarslan was at his home in the Diyarbakır region when England hit this region of Turkey. It took seconds, as he says, to jump up, get his family out into the street and rush to another area, where a building had collapsed, from which he conveys, speaking to the Athens Agency, the images he saw there.

“There was chaos immediately after the earthquake. Everyone who managed to leave their homes was on the street or in their cars as it is winter and cold. When I arrived at the specific point, I saw with my own eyes about 20 people coming out alive from the wreckage through the utter destruction, injured people being transferred to the ambulances and people running left and right looking for their relatives”, says Mahmoud.

He himself was one of the lucky ones, since his house, a two-story building near a village in the area, endured many Richters and remained upright. “I was at my house. I was awake, I hadn’t slept even when the earth started shaking I took my family and we all went out immediately. My house is two stories, I don’t live in an apartment, nor in a big building. Even though it’s not a tall building, it shook to its foundations, while the buildings that didn’t last were mainly the ones with many floors,” he says.

Talking to people, conveys to the Athens Agency the anxiety of the residents of the area about another earthquake, saying that the 7.7-magnitude tremor that struck at noon spread even more panic.

“The night will definitely be long,” says Mahmoud, who – like many others – made sure to take his sisters and mother home, since the area where he lives is considered safer and endured.
