A large police operation is being carried out in the so-called “European quarter” of Brussels, i.e. the area near the headquarters of the Commission. Police are looking for gunmen who have taken refuge in the area, the Brussels Prosecutor’s Office announced this evening.
“The police were alerted around 6pm to an incident in the European quarter,” explains Willemien Baert, a spokesman for the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
“Several armed suspects are said to have fled the area. The police have cordoned off the area and are now looking for these people,” LeSoir newspaper reported on its website.
“Police are looking for several armed suspects on rue Boduognat, located between Square Ambiorix and rue de la Loi. They are ensconced in a building. Several police forces have been deployed on the scene, helicopters, firefighters and members of special units. The surrounding roads have been blocked off,” reports La Libre newspaper.
