Paris police are investigating a report of the rape of a Brazilian tourist that took place in the early hours of last Sunday (5), in the gardens of the Eiffel Tower. She was with her older sister, the target of sexual assault in the same location. The case, confirmed by Sheetis being investigated by the French capital’s 3rd judicial police station, which is now collecting information and images from cameras in the region.
According to information attributed to police sources and published in the French press, the sisters traveled to Paris for tourism. They went out at night on Saturday and met two men, with whom they were walking along the extensive lawn in front of the iconic tower of Paris, called the Champ de Mars.
There, they would have walked away, each with one of the men as an escort. When touched against her will, the older sister would have gotten rid of the aggressor, who fled. She would then have gone in search of her younger sister and found her on the floor of the same Campo de Marte, with the other man on top of her, with her pants down. Surprised, the man would have fled in a black car.
Taken to the police station around 5:30 am, the sisters allegedly reported the case, which was handed over to the judicial police for investigation. Following the protocols for victims of sexual crimes, they would have been referred to the forensic medicine service, for medical care and collection of potential traces.
“The rape at the foot of the Eiffel Tower once again highlights the danger of the Champ de Mars,” said the neighborhood’s deputy mayor, Rachida Dati, Minister of Justice between 2007 and 2010 during Nicolas Sarkozy’s administration.
Since 2020, Republican Party policy has criticized the “increase in delinquency and endemic insecurity” in the area, one of the areas with the highest incidence of crime in central Paris, alongside Trocadero.
Dati proposes that the site be closed overnight, a dedicated municipal police force be put in place, and a surveillance center for monitoring with cameras installed. So far, none of the proposals has been accepted by the City of Paris, under the command of Anne Hidalgo, of the Socialist Party.
