Beijing rejected a request by Washington on Saturday for a phone call between US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and his Chinese counterpart Wei Fangha after the US Air Force shot down a Chinese balloon, a US Pentagon spokesman said on Tuesday.

“Our commitment to keep the channels of communication open will continue,” Air Force Brigadier General Pat Ryder assured, despite the rejection of the US request, which reflects worsening relations between Washington and Beijing.

A US fighter jet shot down the Chinese balloon over the waters off North Carolina on Saturday. According to Washington, it was a spy balloon that entered US airspace to gather information about strategically important facilities. Beijing argued that the balloon served “research purposes, mainly meteorological” and that it “unintentionally” entered US airspace.

On Monday, China’s foreign ministry reiterated that the US shooting down the Chinese balloon “seriously affected and hurt” Sino-US relations.
