Zelensky visits Britain, first time since the war – Meeting today with Sunak

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is in London for a meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak today, his first visit to the UK since Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year.

Since then, he has made only one other trip outside of Ukraine, when he went to the United States and Poland just before Christmas.

In addition to meeting the British prime minister, Zelensky will also visit Ukrainian troops currently training in Britain and address the British parliament.

As Downing Street announced, “Mr Zelensky and Mr Sunak will discuss UK support for Ukraine, starting with an ‘immediate increase’ in military equipment sent to the country from the UK, and the Prime Minister will strengthen the long-term support of

Mr Sunak said: “President Zelensky’s visit to the UK is a testament to his country’s courage, determination and struggle and a testament to the unbreakable friendship between our two countries.”

As the British Prime Minister said, since 2014, the UK has been providing “vital training to Ukrainian forces, enabling them to defend their country, protect their sovereignty and fight for their territory.”

“I am proud that today we will expand this training from soldiers to marines and fighter pilots, ensuring that Ukraine has a military capable of defending its interests in the future,” Sunak said.
