The President of the Republic of Northern Macedonia, Stevo Pentarovski, instructed the new leader of the ruling Social Democratic Party (SDSM), Dimitar Kovacevski, to form a government shortly after noon.
Now, according to the provisions of the country’s Constitution, the caretaker Prime Minister has 20 days to present his government’s program and ask for a vote of confidence from Parliament. Kovacevski has stated that the new government will be formed and will receive a vote of confidence from Parliament by mid-January 2022.
Dimitar Kovacevski was elected the new leader of the SDSM on December 12, replacing Zoran Zaef, who resigned as leader of the ruling party and Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia, following the SDSM’s heavy defeat in the by-elections held in the country in October.
Kovacevski was Zoran Zaef’s choice for both the SDSM leadership and the post of the country’s new prime minister.
In the current government, in addition to SDSM and some smaller parties with which it cooperates, the largest Albanian party in Northern Macedonia, Ali Ahmeti’s DUI, also participates, while the new government will also include the Albanian party “Alternative”, the which will take over three ministries (Health, Public Administration and Diaspora).
The parties that will participate in the new government have 64 deputies, out of 120 in the entire Parliament, thus ensuring autonomy in the new government of the country, which will be led by Dimitar Kovacevski.
