At least nine workers were killed when part of a gold mine collapsed in Burkina Faso.

The collapse occurred on Tuesday night at a mine in Tui province (west), as the head of a regional association representing private individuals involved in industrial-scale mining told Reuters.

“Around 11 pm (ie three hours after the collapse), four workers were found dead. Five more bodies were found this morning,” said Abbas Dera, adding that there are others trapped in the collapsed arcades.

At the same time, however, there are hundreds of smaller gold mines across the territory, which usually operate without a license and are not subject to controls by the relevant authorities.
