The reaction of the Russian embassy in London was prompted by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s order to his Defense Minister to consider which fighter jets could potentially be given to Ukraine in the future to defend the country against the aggressor.

Although Mr Sunak’s spokesman made it clear that this would be done in the future as a “long-term solution” as years of pilot training are required, the Russian embassy warned that such a move would have “military and political consequences for the European continent and for the whole world”.

In the afternoon, Mr. Sunak visited with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a training base for Ukrainian soldiers in the handling of Challenger tanks in south-west England.

A joint press conference followed in which the British Prime Minister pledged to continue supporting the Ukrainian armed forces. “Ukraine cannot be left vulnerable ever again,” the British Prime Minister said.

He also revealed that the British Challengers will be sent to Ukraine “next month”.

Mr. Sunak noted that fighter jets are “certainly part of the conversation,” but noted that the first step is training Ukrainian pilots. “Nothing is ruled out,” he added, avoiding any further reference to any timetable for sending aircraft to Ukraine.

Mr Zelensky said the two countries stand united against the Russian threat and thanked once again for British support. He repeated the call for even more equipment from the West, including aircraft, but also tanks or long-range missiles.

Responding to a related journalistic question, the Ukrainian President emphasized that the armed forces of his country have received valuable assistance from Britain, the US and other countries, but not sending fighter jets will create a “quagmire” and increase the threat posed by the Russia for the whole world.

The Ukrainian President is expected to travel to Paris tonight, where he will meet with President Macron and Chancellor Soltz. On Thursday he will be in Brussels for the summit.
