Many Turkish citizens are protesting the inaction of the Turkish authorities in the earthquake on social media such as Twitter
Ankara “warns” Twitter for “disinformation” in the deadly earthquakes that struck southern Turkey on Monday.
The Turkish government on Wednesday reminded the popular social media platform of “its responsibilities against disinformation, false reports, fake aid campaigns, fake accounts and the sharing of incorrect information.”
The Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey Omer Fatih Sayan held a conference call with two top Twitter executives – John Hughes, global head of Strategic Geopolitics and Economic Public Policy, and Ronan Costello, head of Twitter’s Global Government Policy team.
During the teleconference, the Turkish minister pointed out “Twitter’s duty to curb disinformation, which could cause panic and chaos in society,” according to information obtained by Anadolu.
The meeting came two days after Communications Director Fahrettin Altun called on the social media platform to show a “responsible attitude” in the wake of the deadly earthquakes.
Later, according to sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, Twitter officials pledged during the meeting to engage in greater cooperation with Turkey to combat disinformation.
Twitter executives reportedly pledged that “they will be more sensitive regarding measures to be taken against postings that violate personal rights, disturb public order, and endanger the safety of life and property in accordance with Law No. 5651.”
Many Turkish citizens are protesting the lack of response of the Turkish authorities to the earthquake on social media such as Twitter. The Turkish authorities have already made arrests for the inadequacy of the state apparatus.
