Poland will close a major border crossing with Belarus until further notice, Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski announced today, as relations between Warsaw and Minsk sour.

The already strained relationship between the two countries worsened further on Wednesday when a Polish-born journalist was sentenced to eight years in prison by a Belarusian court, a trial that Poland condemned as politically motivated.

“Due to the significant interest of state security, I have decided to suspend until further notice and from 12:00 on February 10 this year the crossing of the Polish-Belarusian border crossing at Bobrovniki,” Kaminski wrote on Twitter.

Bobrovniki, located more than 200 kilometers northeast of Warsaw, is the main border crossing between Poland and Belarus.

Kaminsky added that after the conviction of journalist Andrey Potzobut by the Belarusian judiciary, he will ask for sanctions to be imposed on more people connected to the Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko.

Poland has been reduced to a key haven for Belarusian dissidents, and Warsaw one of Ukraine’s staunchest supporters, following the invasion of the country by Belarus’s ally Russia.
