Moldova, a small country of 2.6 million inhabitants, neighboring Ukraine and a candidate since the end of June for EU membership, is being militarily threatened by Russia with the presence of Russian soldiers on its territory
Moldova’s intelligence services said today they had detected “destabilization” activities, following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s assurances that he had stopped a Russian plan involving the former Soviet republic.
“Based on the information presented by our Ukrainian partner and internal evidence, we confirm that we have identified activities aimed at weakening and destabilizing Moldova,” the SIS services wrote in a press release.
“We cannot give further details at this time due to the risk of compromising” the measures underway to “clarify” what happened, they added.
“Our services work to guarantee the security of the country and use all the information of our partners to prevent and prevent such attempts,” reacted the pro-European president Maia Sandu.
During his visit to Brussels, the Ukrainian head of state declared that he “stopped a plan to destroy Moldova, a plan that was in the hands of Russian intelligence services.”
“This plan shows who, when and how to deliver a fatal blow to Moldovan democracy,” Zelensky said. “Well I don’t know if Moscow actually gave the order to carry out this plan but in any case (…) this plan is very similar to what they tried to implement against Ukraine.”
Moldova, a small country of 2.6 million inhabitants, neighboring Ukraine and a candidate since the end of June for EU membership, is threatened militarily by Russia with the presence of Russian soldiers on its territory, in the pro-Russian separatist region of Transnistria.
Maia Sandu recently accused Russia of being behind arms, goods, human trafficking or funding anti-government protests.
