Landslides in southern Peru’s Arequipa province have killed sixteen people, injured 27 others, while 20 are still missing and the total number of those affected exceeds 12,000, according to the latest official provisional casualty count released Thursday by the national civil protection institute (INDECI).
The previous official tally of the back-to-back landslides, which began on Sunday after torrential rains, put 15 dead and 20 injured.
All the victims are located in the district of Mariano Valcarcel, in the province of Camana, west of the city of Arequipa and about 840 kilometers south of the capital Lima.
Damage is most extensive in the cities of Miski, San Martin, Secocha and Uraski, where roads, homes and schools were destroyed or damaged, INDECI said.
Among the victims were six adults, three men and three women, aged between 20 and 70, and a four-year-old child. No information was provided on the remaining nine victims.
Peruvian President Dina Bolluarte, who has been facing a popular uprising since December, with a central demand for her to leave office, dissolve parliament and immediately call early presidential and parliamentary elections, visited the affected area on Tuesday and inspected the air damage. This is a sector of Peru where many mines operate.
Prefectural authorities in Arequipa express fears that gold miners may have been trapped in galleries that collapsed or flooded.
